Unlike most of the other reviewers here, the Belkin hub actually worked for me. Checking around, I felt the AC adapter for the hub, and it was insanely hot. True, I'd get an annoying popup from Windows whenever I turned on the printer or scanner that ran through it, telling me that the peripheral in question would run faster if I plugged it directly into the computer, but the speed didn't bother me. I got a good 5 years out of it, easily.Until I came home today and caught the unmistakable scent of melting plastic. The ventilation grille had started to melt. I guess that about wraps it up for this hub, since I'm sure not going to use it again.
As many others have said, there's no reason to by a powered USB hub when it can't even support one USB device which is not self-powered. I also get the "Not enough power" message pop up on my computer when trying to connect one usb device.
Think long and hard before buying this item to use on your computer. Can not return the item because I've already opened it.
Hooked the Belkin USB to the installed hub and immediately received a message that the computer could not recognized the new USB device. Checked Google and Belkin support site.
I bought the powered hub to support my new WD portable hard drive that needs more power than the USB installed hub can provide. It appears that even though Belkin says this is XP compatible it is really not.
No driver available for this product. Tried all suggestions I found on Google with no luck.
This is the first Belkin peice of equipment that has not worked for me. I was lucky it did not totally ruin my computer as described in some of the other reviews.
Today the 7-port hub gave up so it is time to buy a new one.Regarding others comments about the 4-port hub not being powered, there is a switch on the side that allows you to switch between powered and unpowered ports. I have both the 4-port and 7-port Belkin USB hubs. Both have worked as advertised for more than three years. Why you would want to do this I don't know. If your hub seems not to be powered check the switch.
Other than that it worked OK for a while, then simply quit working. I'm not certain exactly when I bought the 4-port hub. The lights come on for about 5 seconds, then go out. I believe it was about a year ago. It appeared to work well with my PowerBook G4 and my new iMac, but, as noted by others, it does not provide power to devices even though it is itself powered. Short. Anyway, I'm going to try another brand as a replacement.
